The Community Song (Roll Over the Ocean)

This is a song for children and teenagers about community.  It is most appropriate in informal  situations, especially with children and adolescents.   It is also popular with some Faith and Light / L'Arche groups.

The lyrics and tune are believed to be in the public domain, although the author and composer are unknown.    The song  was sung at some youth events in New Zealand in the 1980s, the maker of this video learned it at the same time in the Philippines, and YouTube shows that it is still being used in a number of countries in the 21st century, especially in Asia and the Pacific.

If you have any information about the aurhor and composer, or where to find sheet music for the song, please leave a message in the Comments box at the bottom of the page.

Lyrics

It’s me. It’s me. It’s me who builds community.
It’s me. It’s me. It’s me who builds community
It’s me. It’s me. It’s me who builds community.
It’s me that builds community…oh, oh, oh

Chorus:
Roll over the ocean, roll over the sea,
Roll over the ocean in the deep blue sea. (Hey!)
Roll over the ocean, roll over the sea.
Go and do your part and build community.

It’s you.  It's you.   It's you who builds
community …etc

It’s us…etc

It’s love…etc

It’s Christ… etc

It’s me, it’s you, it’s us, it’s love, it’s Christ that builds community,
It’s me, it’s you, it’s us, it’s love, it’s Christ that builds community,
It’s me, it’s you, it’s us, it’s love, it’s Christ that builds community,
It’s me, it’s you, it’s us, it’s love, it’s Christ that builds community.
