When Mary Listened to God's Word

This hymn about Mary was written by English folk-musician, teacher and youth-ministry specialist Damian Lundy.

It was included in More Songs of the Spirit - Songs and Hymns of Renewal, Volume 2, which was published by Kevin Mayhew Ltd in the United Kingdom in 1981.

In 2015 it was released by Kevin Mayhew Publication on the CD Favourite Catholic Folk Hymns, although it does not appear to have been released on other platforms.

The song is set to an unnamed tune, also by Lundy.  This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of Dm, the first few notes are A G A D D D C D_ with accompanying chords Dm / Gm / Dm.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
When Mary listened to God’s word
She trembled at the things she heard
For Mary dwelt in poverty
In faith and in simplicity, Ave Maria.

I cast the Mighty from their throne
The little children are my own
And you my chosen little one
Shall be the mother of my Son, Ave Maria.

It is your will let it be done
I welcome him your own dear Son
When Mary’s little boy was born
Angels and simple folk looked on, Ave Maria.

Dear Mary, grant that we, like you
May do the things God wants us to
For Christ may come again if we
Live humbly in simplicity, Ave Maria.
