O Sun of Justice (fill our hearts)

This is a hymn for morning, which also has Easter and Trinity themed verses.

The words were translated from a 6th century Latin hymn "Jam Christe, sol justitiae", by American Roman Catholic Dominican friar Francis "Frank" Currier Quinn (1932-2008 - ref).

It is not the same as "O Sun of Justice, Jesus Christ" - another translation by Peter J Scagnelli.

With meter 8 8 8 8, tunes these words have been set to include:
  • ROCKINGHAM, adpt Edward Miller
  • WAREHAM by William Knapp (1698-1768)

Lyrics

O sun of Justice, fill our hearts,
Where sinfulness has bought decay;
Dispel the darkness of our souls
As now the night gives place to day.

Make this a fitting time for us,
A time to change and turn to you;
Please hear our prayer, most patient Lord,
Repentance in our hearts renew.

As spring awakes the frozen earth,
So Easter blooms from lent's restraints.
Rejoice! for Christ will conquer death.
And bring his grace to make us saints.

So sanctify our penance, Lord,
That strengthened by the graces won,
We may amend our sinful lives
And toward our goal more surely run.

O everlasting Trinity,
We soon shall see that day of days
When all creation, born again,
Will sing an Easter song of praise.
