The Gift Sublime

This hymn about Jesus, the Father's gift to humankind, was written by Australian Roman Catholic (Franciscan Missionary of Mary) religious sister, Irene O'Connor FMM (ref).   It was originally released under the name Myriam Frances.

It was written while she was living in Singapore, and recorded on an EP, Rhythm to the Lord, which was recorded and released there by Phillips in 1966.  This recording featured O'Connor and an unnamed choir.   Later the song was included on Sing a Song to the Lord, an LP (ref), which was recorded and released by Phillips in Australia in 1973, and rereleased in the USA in 1976.

The catalogue of the National Library of Australia says that a 27-page song book was produced in the 1970s, which presumably included all the tracks from Sing to the Lord.   No current sources of this have been found.

Lyrics

1 Christ is the way, we follow him.
Christ is the truth, we learn from him.
Christ is the life, we live by him.
Our closest friend, we trust in him.

Chorus:
We thank you, Father in heaven
For the gift of your son divine.
For Jesus Christ, our saviour,
Your gift, a gift sublime.
For Jesus Christ, our saviour,
Your gift, a gift sublime.

2 Christ is the light, who shines on us.
The shepherd good, who cares for us.
The lamb of God, who died for us.
The bread of life, who strengthens us.
