It has two alternative first lines - which one was on the original version has not yet been determined.
One makes the hymn suitable for All Saints Day, and also for other times when the saints are remembered, while the other (Sing of Christ, proclaim his glory)is for more general use.
The words were written by Church of England priest William Josiah Irons
(1812–1883).
With meter 87 87 D, tunes it is set to include:
