King of Kings (In the darkness | Praise the Father)

This is a hymn of praise of Christ the King.  Written by the a small group in the early 21st century, it has the form of a traditional four-verses-with-chorus hymn, although most recordings so far present in a contemporary/band style, and some sheet music notates it as  a "power ballad".

It was written by:
  • New Zealand born-and-raised singer and songwriter, and member of the Australian Christian music group Hillsong Worship group, Brooke Gabrielle Ligertwood (née Fraser; b. 1983)
  • American Christian mega-church pastor's son and music producer and songwriter. Jason Ingram (b. 19764)
  • Australian Christian song-writer, and husband of Brooke Ligertwood, Scott Ligertwood (b. 1983).

It was first published in 2019 by Hillsong Music Publishing Australia & Fellow Ships Music/So Essential Tunes.

It is set to an unnamed tune by Ingram. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes of the melody are D FFF D  D GGG D   GF E_   D FF    with accompanying chords   D / G /  A / D.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so should not be reproduced here. They are currently available on this video from Hillsong.

That said, the words are on a number of websites, and on every one reviewed so far, they have no punctuation.  But the official sheet music released by Hillsong (links above) does have commas, semi-colons and full-stops.   So I have reproduced the full words, including punctuation, below.    They may need to be removed if the copyright owners object.

1. In the darkness, we were waiting, without hope, without light,
Till from heaven You came running;
There was mercy in Your eyes.
To fulfil the law and prophets
To a virgin came the Word,
From a throne of endless glory,
To a cradle in the dirt.

Chorus:
Praise the Father,
Praise the Son,
Praise the Spirit, three in one:
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings.

2. To reveal the kingdom coming
and to reconcile the lost,
To redeem the whole creation,
You did not despise the cross.
For even in Your suffering
You saw to the other side;
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus, for our sake, You died,

3. And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath,
Till that stone was moved for good,
For the Lamb had conquered death.
And the dead rose from their tombs,
and the angels stood in awe;
For the souls of all who’d come
to the Father, are restored.

4. And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame.
Now this gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel, shall not faint;
By His blood and in His Name,
In His freedom I am free:
For the love of Jesus Christ,
Who has resurrected me.
