Blessed Jesus at Your Word

This is a traditional-style hymn of praise.

Verses 1-3 hymn were translated to English by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878). They are based on Liebster Jesu wir sind hier by Tobias Clausnitzer, which was published in1663.

The source of verse 4 is unknown.

With meter 7.8.7.8.8.8, it is almost always set to the tune LIEBSTER JESU, which was written by Johann R. Ahle in 1664.

The original title was "Blessed Jesus at Thy Word", but now the hymn is usually sung as "Blessed Jesus at Your Word".

    Lyrics

    Traditional language:

    Blessèd Jesus, at Thy Word
    We are gathered all to hear Thee;
    Let our hearts and souls be stirred
    Now to seek and love and fear Thee,
    By Thy teachings sweet and holy,
    Drawn from earth to love Thee solely.

    All our knowledge, sense and sight
    Lie in deepest darkness shrouded,
    Til Thy Spirit breaks our night
    With the beams of truth unclouded.
    Thou alone to God canst win us;
    Thou must work all good within us.

    Glorious Lord, Thyself impart!
    Light of light, from God proceeding,
    Open Thou our ears and heart;
    Help us by Thy Spirit’s pleading;
    Hear the cry Thy people raises;
    Hear and bless our prayers and praises.

    Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
    Praise to Thee and adoration!
    Grant that we Thy Word may trust
    And obtain true consolation
    While we here below must wander,
    Till we sing Thy praises yonder.

    Modern English:

    Blessed Jesus, at Your Word
    We are gathered all to hear You;
    Let our hearts and souls be stirred
    Now to seek and love and fear You,
    By Your teachings sweet and holy,
    Drawn from earth to love You solely.

    Til Your Spirit breaks our night
    With the beams of truth unclouded.
    Your alone to God can win us;
    Your must work all good within us.

    Glorious Lord, Yourself impart!
    Light of light, from God proceeding,
    Open You our ears and heart;
    Help us by Your Spirit’s pleading;
    Hear the cry Your people raise;
    Hear and bless our prayers and praises.
