Come Follow Me (I am the Light bringing you out of darkness)

This is a hymn about following Jesus. The text is based on various parts of the Gospel of John, with verses about Jesus as the Light, Sower, Shepherd and Life.

It was written by Indian Roman Catholic priest, musician, liturgist and composer Aniceto Nazareth (1938-2021), and first published in 1984.   It was later included in Songs of the Spirit Volume 3 which was released by Kevin Mayhew Publications in 1987.   Second-hand copies of this book appear to be the only way to get sheet music for the hymn today.

The song is set to an unnamed tune, also by Nazareth. This has a 3/4 time signature. In the key of C, the first few notes are E CD E CD E F G  FED F.

- 1 I am the light, bringing You out of darkness, So come, take my light to the world. I am the Bread you must feed to the hungry. The wine that must cheer every heart. Chorus: Foxes have holes, birds have their nests, But the Son of Man has no place to rest. Come, follow Me, be the light of the nations, Leave your nets and come, follow Me. 2 I am the Life that must change every life And the Way that must alter your ways. I am the Truth and my Word is the cross You must take if you want to be free. 3 I am the Sower, come, work in my vineyard, My field. Tend my vines, sow the grain. And should it fall to the ground, it can only Spring up with new life, hundredfold. 4 I am the Shepherd come into my sheepfold To help feed my lambs, feed my sheep. Bring back the straying and bind up their wounds And rejoice when you’ve found what was lost.
