It was written in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines) by Filipino Roman Catholic priest Fr Eduardo Pardo "Fr. Honti" Hontiveros, SJ (1923 –2008). The title, Pananagutan, means responsibility.
The song has been translated into various languages, including Mandarin.
