It was written in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines) by Filipino Roman Catholic priest Fr Eduardo Pardo "Fr. Honti" Hontiveros, SJ (1923 –2008). The title, Pananagutan, means responsibility.
The song has been translated into various languages, including Mandarin.
Para sa sarili lamang
Walang sinuman ang namamatay
Para sa sarili lamang.
Koro:
Tayong lahat ay may pananagutan sa isa't-isa
Tayong lahat ay tinipon ng Diyos
na kapiling N'ya.
Sa ating pagmamahalan
At paglilingkod kanino man
Tayo ay nagdadala ng balita ng kaligtasan.
Sabay-sabay ngang mag-aawitan
Ang mga bansa
Tayo'y tinuring ng Panginoon
Bilang mga anak.
We are not our own.
And no one will die as his own master,
Man does not die alone.
Chorus:
Christ Jesus calls us to love one another,
and to understand.
Friend to friend, brother to brother,
we must give our hand.
In our love for one another,
in each kindly word.
The love of Christ shines forth,
and His Gospel is distinctly heard.
We feed the hungry, cloth the naked,
give drink to those who thirst,
For we must serve our brothers,
rememb’ring God has loved us first.
We clothe the naked, shelter the stranger
The hungry and poor we feed.
For we are called to serve one another
as God serves those in need.
We do not live alone,
Our lives belong to God
In living and dying for one another,
the Lord remains with us.
The song has been translated into various languages, including Mandarin.
There is an English-language version called Brother to Brother (author unknown) which is sung to the same tune, although it is not an exact translation.
It is set to an unnamed tune by Hontiveros. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes of the melody are A, F FE F GG A B G EEEF FG AF G_ with accompanying chords D / G / A7 / D.
