The tune apparently dates to the 12th century, although the lyrics may have been written later, and the Irish-language version was written later still. The composer, author and translator (from the original English to Irish) are unknown.
The song was transcribed the performance of a local singer by organist and musical director at St. Aidan's Cathedral in Enniscorthy, William Grattan Flood (1859–1928). It was then published in The Oxford Book of Carols, and became well-known following this.
