The author is unknown: It was first published as a poem in pamphlet with one of Charles Wesley’s hymns, and because of this the words are sometimes attributed to Charles Wesley (1707 - 1788). However many scholars do not believe this is correct.
Some have suggested that it was written as a parody of, or in response to, the English national hymn, God Save the King - and the words were initially sung to the same tune (also used for the American patriotic hymn My Country Tis of Thee).
With meter of 664.6664, it is now almost-always set to the tune ITALIAN HYMN (also known as MOSCOW or TRINITY), which was composed for the text by Italian-born composer, Giardini Felice (1716–1796).
