Unto Caesar Let us Render

This hymn is based on Jesus instruction to "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." The words were written by American Lutheran pastor and hymn-translator Emmanuel Cronenwett (1841-1931).

With meter 8787, the tune that it was originally sung to is unknown. Tunes that it has been set to include:
  • DRAKES BROUGHTON by Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
  • CROSS OF JESUS by John Stainer (1840-1901)
  • RATHBUN by Ithamar Conkey (1851).

Instrumental - piano. Tune RATHBUN

Instrumental - organ:

Unto Caesar let us render
All things that Caesar's are;
Custom, fear and tribute tender,
Both in peace and time of war.

Government is by God's order
Civil rule by his command;
For protection to our border,
Safety, peace, throughout the land.

By the will of God appointed,
All must fear the power that be;
Who lays hand on God's anointed
Sins against his majesty.
