My Soul is Sad (Could you not watch one hour with me?)

This Good Friday hymn about Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane was written by Francesca Leftley (1955-) and published in 1978 in the 20th Century Folk Hymnal, volume 4.

It has subsequently been published in Singing the Faith Plus and in some editions of Hymns Old and New.

It is set to an un-named tune, also by Leftley.    The tune is in 4/4 time, and was originally published in the key of A, with the first few notes being A, G A E.

The lyrics are copyright, so cannot be reproduced in full here, although they are available on this website.

There are three verses, with four lines in each, and the last line each on is the same.  There is no chorus.   A rough outline of the words is:
1  My soul is sad, my heart is breaking tonight ...
... Could you not watch one hour with me?

2  Could you not keep awake for one hour with me? ...

3  And so I weep, and there is no-one to hear, ...

My soul is sad, my heart is breaking tonight Could you not watch and comfort me until light? Am I alone, surrounded only by night? Could you not watch one hour with me? Could you not keep awake for one hour with me? Is it so hard that you should do this for me? I die for you that you might always be free. Could you not watch one hour with me? And so I weep, and there is no-one to hear, I am in pain; will on-one witness my tears? I am your God, and as my passion draws near, Could you not watch one hour with me?
