Look Beyond (the bread you eat)

This Communion hymn is based on the bread of life discourse in John 6 (ref).

It was was written by American Roman Catholic Darryl Ducote of The Dameans. It was first released in 1969 by F.E.L. Publications on the recording "Tell the World" and later in 1979 by Damean Music.

It was included in the Hymnal for Young Christians Volume 2, and in GIA's Gather Comprehensive's 1st and 2nd editions, and sheet music for it is still available from OCP and Sheet Music Plus (link below).

The song has also been translated into Dutch as Wat Ik Neem En Eet Als Brood - and possibly into other languages too.

It is set to a tune, also by Ducote, named LOOK BEYOND. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of F, the first few notes are cc B A F D C.

A rough outline is:
Chorus:
Look beyond the bread you eat;
See your Savior and your Lord.
Look beyond the cup you drink;
See his love poured out as blood.

1 Give us a sign that we might believe in you ...

2 I am the bread which from the heavens came ...

3 The bread I give you will be my very flesh ...

Chorus: Look beyond the bread you eat; See your Savior and your Lord. Look beyond the cup you drink; See his love poured out as blood. 1 Give us a sign that we might believe in you. Moses had manna from the sky. 2 I am the bread which from the heavens came; Those who eat this bread will never die. 3 The bread I give you will be my very flesh; My blood will truly be your drink.
