Magnfiicat (My soul glorifies the Lord) - Belasco

This is a setting of the Magnificat, Mary's hymn of praise.

It was composed by Ken Belasco from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, who was a church musician there in the 1960s - 80s. Later in life he was living in Geneva, Switzerland.

The song uses the text of Luke 1: 46-55 from The Grail translation, and so the lyrics are still copyright.

It is published as a setting for use during Night Prayer in McCrimmon Publication's Celebration Hymnal for Everyone - and this is the only located source of sheet music for it.

The unnamed tune has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of C, the first few notes are G G ec G#G A.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
Refrain:
My soul glorifies the Lord,
My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
He looks on his servant in her nothingness
Henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

1 The almighty works marvels for me ...

2 He puts forth his arm in strength ...

3 He fills the starving with good things ...

4 He protects Israel, his servant ...

5 Give glory to the father amighty ...

KEEP IN CASE ORIGINAL IS REMOVED, BUT DO NOT DISPLAY
My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

  4. Could someone who knows Ken ask him if he would be willing to make a recording of this hymn, and load it to YouTuble? Or if he would be willing to share a copy of the sheet music for it?

He can contact me by emailing editor@GodSongs.net
