The 12 Apostles / The Apostle Song / Yes Jesus Called Them One by One

This song helps children to remember the names of the twelve apostles. It is set to the tune "Jesus Loves me This I Know".

The author and original source are unknown: the earliest reference located so far is a book called Youth Melodies and Action Songs which was published in 1952. Most people who use the song treat it as if it is now in the public domain.

If the third verse (which mentions Matthias and Paul) is included, then this song can be used alongside There were Twelve Disciples to teach the difference between disciples (ie followers) and apostles (ie followers who were sent out to spread the message).

Solo singer, unaccompanied:

Singer with praise band:

Jesus called them one by one,
Peter, Andrew, James and John,
Next, came Philip, Thomas too,
Matthew and Bartholomew.

Yes, Jesus called them,
Yes, Jesus called them,
Yes, Jesus called them,
He called them one by one.

James the one they called the less,
Simon, also Thaddeus,
Twelfth apostle Judas made,
Jesus was by him betrayed.

Matthias then took Judas' place,
To preach to men of every race,
Paul three preaching trips did make,
And went to Rome for Jesus' sake.
