This is a hymn of praise.
It was written in 1826, for use on Trinity Sunday, by English-born Latin scholar, poet, Anglican vicar and later Bishop of Calcutta, Reginald Heber (1783-1826).
With meter 11.12.12.10, it almost always set to the tune NICAEA (Dykes), which was composed for the text by English organist and vicar, John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) in 1861.
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee
perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty,
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.
