Our Lady's Holy Name How Sweet (Mary How Sweetly Falls that Word)

This is a hymn about Mary, possibly written for the feast of the Holy Name of Mary.

The original author is unknown.  Hymn-books which it was published in include "First Truths or Lessons and Hymns for Christian Children" published in 1843 by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, London, England (ref) and based on this date it is safe to assume that it is now in the public domain.

The Parochial Hymn Book 1879 presents it set to an unnamed tune by E M Bray - sheet music for this is available below.

Lyrics

Traditional language

Mary! how sweetly falls that word
On my enraptured ear!
Oft do I breathe in accents low,
That sound when none are near.

Chorus:
Sing O my lips, and loudly proclaim,
O Mary, how sweet is thy name.

Sweet as the warbling of a bird,
Sweet as a mother's voice,
So sweet to me is that dear name,
It makes my soul rejoice.

Bright as the glittering stars appear,
Bright as the moonbeams shine,
So bright in my mind's eye is seen
Thy loveliness divine!

Through thee I offer my requests;
And when my prayer is done,
In ecstasy sublime I see
Thee seated near thy Son.

Modern English

Mary! how sweetly falls that word
On my enraptured ear!
Oft do I breathe in accents low,
That sound when none are near.

Chorus:
Sing O my lips, and loudly proclaim,
O Mary, how sweet is your name.

Sweet as the warbling of a bird,
Sweet as a mother's voice,
So sweet to me is that dear name,
It makes my soul rejoice.

Bright as the glittering stars appear,
Bright as the moonbeams shine,
So bright in my mind's eye is seen
Your loveliness divine!

Through you I offer my requests;
And when my prayer is done,
In ecstasy sublime I see
You seated near your Son.
