Eye has not Seen

This is a hymn of petition for God's wisdom.  The refrain is based on 1 Corinthians 2:9-10.

It was written by American Lutheran composer and pastoral musician, Marty Haugen (b 1950) and first published in 1982.  Sheet music from GIA Publications is still available (links below).

A Spanish translation, Ni Ojo Ni Oído, has been made by Ronald F Krisman, and is also still available.

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Haugen. This has a 3/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes are EFG F_ GAB A_ A d_ d c A_ F GAG F_ with accompanying chords Em / D / Em7 / D / Bm / F#m / G / A / D.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
Chorus:
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, teach us the wisdom of God.

1  When pain and sorrow weigh us down, be near to us, O Lord ...

2 Our lives are but a single breath, we flower and we fade ....

3  To those who see with eyes of faith the Lord is ever near ..

4  We sing a mystery from the past in halls where saints have trod ...

See more ...

KEEP IN CASE ORIGINAL IS REMOVED, BUT DO NOT DISPLAY

Chorus:
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love him;
Spirit of love, come, give us the mind of Jesus, teach us the wisdom of God.

1  When pain and sorrow weigh us down, be near to us, O Lord,
forgive the weakness of our faith, and bear us up within your peaceful word.

2  Our lives are but a single breath, we flower and we fade,
yet all our days are in your hands, so we return in love what love has made.

3  To those who see with eyes of faith the Lord is ever near,
reflected in the faces of all the poor and lowly of the world.

4  We sing a mystery from the past in halls where saints have trod,
yet ever new the music rings to Jesus, Living Song of God.
