Deep Within Us / Song of Jesus Christ

This is a hymn about faithfulness to Christ. The words are based on Philippians‬ ‭2:5-11‬.

It was written by John Sheehan: he is likely to be American, no further details have been located about him, or the first publication of the song.

It was arranged and recorded by American Roman Catholic liturgical musician and songwriter Carey Landry (b 1944), and included in his album "I Will not Forget You".   It was also included in volume 2 of the Glory and Praise series released by North American Liturgy Resources in the 1970s.

There don't appear to be any more publications or official recordings of the song, or any in-print sheet music.  But YouTube videos suggest that it is currently used by some religious congregations in Africa.

Detailed of the unnamed tune are to be advised.

Lyrics

The lyrics of this song may be copyright,  They are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:

Chorus:
Deep within us, shared among us,
May we ever keep the mind and heart
of Jesus Christ.

1. Through he was at one with God,
He did not think he should retain,
Equality with God, with God.

2. He gave himself, he emptied himself,
And took the nature of a slave,
To be a man like us, like us.

3. He became more humbled and yet,
For he accepted even death,
A death upon a cross, a cross.

4. Therefore God raised him to the height,
And gave him a name above all names,
In heaven and on earth, on earth.

5. So at his name all knee should bend,
And every tongue proclaim,
That Jesus Christ is Lord, is Lord.
