Hosanna Lord (We cry ‘Hosanna Lord’ /Behold our saviour comes / Hail to the chosen one)

This is a folk-style hymn for Palm Sunday, based on the word Hosanna.

It was written by American member of the charismatic Anglican Community of Celebration, and leader of The Fisherfolk outreach music ministry, Mimi Farra, and first published in 1975 by Celebration/Kingsway's Thankyou Music.

Hymn-books where the original was published in include:
No current sources of sheet music have been found:   seccond-hand copies of the book listed above are the best source.

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Farra. This has a Common time signature. In the key of E, the first few notes of the melody are EFG Ac c_ AGAc C_

Additional verses were added by American contemporary Christian songwriter Claire Cloninger (1942–2019), and the chorus / tune formed the basis of a song in the 1987 musical "Jesus Shall Reign" by Claire Cloninger, Gary Rhodes and Don Hart.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website - or this one for the 1987 version.   A rough outline is:

Original words

Chorus:
We cry 'Hosanna, Lord, yes, Hosanna, Lord,'
yes, 'Hosanna, Lord' to You.

1  Behold, our Saviour comes. Behold, the Son of our God.
He offers Himself and He comes among us, a lowly servant to all.

2  Children wave their palms as the King of all kings rides by.
Should we forget to praise our God, the very stones would sing.

3  He comes to set us free. He gives us liberty.
His vict'ry over death is the eternal sign of God's love for us.

Verses from the later version

1  Hail to the chosen one, honor and praises we bring
The prophets of old have foretold
His coming as our Messiah and King
His coming as our Messiah and King.

2  Jesus Emmanuel, Jesus Emmanuel, savior and ruler of men.
We lay down our palms and our hearts
We lay down our palms and our hearts before Him
and lift our voices again

3  He comes in majesty He comes in majesty, power and glory and grace.
Now unto the King of this holy nation, our adoration we raise.
