It was written by English Roman Catholic liturgical musician and publisher Kevin Mayhew (1942-2021). The song was first published in the 20th Century Folk Hymnal Volume 1 by Mayhew-McCrimmon Ltd in 1974.

These books are the only known sources of sheet-music for the song.
The song is set to an unnamed tune, also by Mayhew. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes of the melody are D_ F A C D_ B BA F_ AA AF E_ with accompanying chords D / A7 / D / D7 / G / D / F#m / G.
