I Will be the Vine

This is a gentle hymn about God as the source of life for Christians. The chorus is based on John 15:5, which presents the image of God as the vine and God's people as branches, while the verses draw from several pieces of scripture.

It was written by Irish Roman Catholic priest, song-writer and performer Liam Lawton (b 1959), and first published by GIA Publications.   Later, it was included in the Irish publication, In Caelo - Songs for a Pilgrim People, and in GIA Publications Gather II and III and RitualSong collections.

It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Lawton. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes of the melody are DE F E D_  FA B B G B B A_.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website - along with guitar chords for the song.  A rough outline is:
Chorus:
I will be the vine and you will be the branches,
All you who live in me will never, never die.
I will be the sign, I will offer many chances,
So live, oh live in me and you shall have new life.

1 Remain in me as I remain in you ...

2 As the Father loved me, so have I loved you ...

3 If you are my friends, you will live my commands ...

KEEP IN CASE ORIGINAL IS REMOVED, BUT DO NOT DISPLAY Chorus:
I will be the vine and you will be the branches,
All you who live in me will never, never die.
I will be the sign, I will offer many chances,
So live, oh live in me and you shall have new life.

1 Remain in me as I remain in you.
You may ask what you will, ask what you will,
And you shall receive.

2 As the Father loved me, so have I loved you.
Remain in my love, remain in my love,
And I will give you life.

3 If you are my friends, you will live my commands.
There is no greater love, no greater love
Than to lay down your life for your friends.
