Come Holy Ghost our Souls Inspire (And lighten with celestial fire) - Cosin

This is a hymn invoking the Holy Spirit.   It is based on the Latin hymn "Veni Creator" which is attributed to priest, poet and theologian, Rabanus Maurus (c. 776-856).

This translation was made by English scholar, priest and later bishop, John Cosin (1594-1672), and first published in his book, Collection of Private Devotions, 1627.

It has been used at the coronation ceremony of many of England's monarchs - including Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, and King Charles III in 2023.

This is a different translation from Charles Wesley's "Come Holy Ghost our hearts inspire, et us thine influence prove."

With meter 8.8.8.8, tune that it has been set to include:
  • VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS (Plainsong)
  • PENTECOST (Boyd) by William Boyd (1847-1928) - which was written for this text.
