Our Lady of Fatima / Dear Lady of Fatima

This is a hymn about Mary's appearance at Fatima.

It was written in the autumn of 1949 (ref) by Irish-American housewife and Block Rosary promoter (ref), Gladys Gollahon (1908-? ref).  If you have any more information about Gladys, especially her date of death, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Recordings in the 1950s by Red Foley, Richard Hayes and Kitty Kallen, were popular.

Although it did not feature in mainstream hymnals, sheet music for the song was first published in 1950.  It is out of print today, but second hand copies are sometimes available on Amazon.

The song is  often sung with a key change between the 2nd and 3rd verses.

Hymn title with a statue of Our Lady of Fatima - lyrics the the song are given on this page.

Lyrics

Ave Maria, Ave Maria The heavens were opened
Our Lady appeared at Fatima one day
To tell us again of the great need for prayer
As Her children we answer this way.

Chorus:
Dear Lady of Fatima,
We come on bended knee,
To beg Your intercession,
For peace and unity.
Dear Mary, won't You show us,
The right and shining way,
We pledge our love and offer You,
A Rosary each day.

You promised at Fatima,
Each time that You appeared,
To help us if we pray to You,
To banish war and fear.

Dear Lady, on First Saturdays,
We ask Your guiding hand,
For grace and guidance here on earth,
And protection for our land.

    1. I'm afraid I don't know: in the USA, it will depend on whether the copyright was registered and renewed at appropriate times. In other countries, it will depend on how long it has been since Gladys' death (I don't know if she's still alive or not).

If you want to make a commercial recording, it would be best to consult a lawyer or other copyright expert. (Advice given here is general only: it it not legal advice.)

    2. The copyright was registered in 1950 and renewed appropriately in 1977. Based on current copyright law, the song is not in the public domain until 2045. Robbins Music is now owned by CPP Belwin (part of Alfred Publishing). The web address for CPP Belwin is below. You can click on Copyright Resources for a link to reprint permission forms. Presumably you can scan and email them directly to Alfred. http://www.mpa.org/music-publisher/3133

    3. Process is the same for recordings. You will need a mechanical license to record. Perhaps you can get more information on this if you write or call. There is a charge for it.
