Leave Your Country and Your People

This is a hymn about following Jesus.  The text appears to be based on Genesis  12:1 and Acts 7:3.

The song was written by American Roman Catholic priest, teacher, playwright and author Willard F Jabusch (1930-2018).

It was included on "Look for the Lord: Songs for Worship & Reflection", a CD of Jabusch's songs which was recorded in Airwave Studios, Chicago and released in 2000 (ref).

With meter 8787d, it was originally set to an unnamed tune by Jabusch. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of D the first few notes are F_ D FD FD G_ F_   Other tunes it has been set to include PLEADING SAVIOUR by Joshua Leavitt (1794—1873) - which has some similarities to Jabusch's original tune.

It was first published by OCP Publications.   However it is now out of print with them, and at the time of writing not included in any of their collections.   Hymn-books which it has been published in include:
The last two of these books are still in-print, and are now the only-known source of sheet-music for the hymn.

Looking into the desert at sunrise - Leave your country and your people, Leave your family and your friends. Travel to the land he'll show you; God will bless the one he sends. 1 Go like Abraham before you, When he heard the Father's call, Walking forth in faith and trusting; God is master of us all. 2 Sometimes God's word is demanding, Leave the security you know, Breaking ties and bonds that hold you, When the voice of God says, Go. 3 Take the path into the desert, Barren seems the rock and sand. God will lead you through the desert, When you follow his command. 4 Go with courage up the mountain, Climb the narrow, rocky ledge, Leave behind all things that hinder, God with only God as pledge.

Chorus:
Leave your country and your people,
Leave your family and your friends.
Travel to the land he'll show you;
God will bless the one he sends.

1 Go like Abraham before you,
When he heard the Father's call,
Walking forth in faith and trusting;
God is master of us all.

2 Sometimes God's word is demanding,
Leave the security you know,
Breaking ties and bonds that hold you,
When the voice of God says, Go.

3 Take the path into the desert,
Barren seems the rock and sand.
God will lead you through the desert,
When you follow his command.

4 Go with courage up the mountain,
Climb the narrow, rocky ledge,
Leave behind all things that hinder,
God with only God as pledge.
