Silent Night

This is a very popular gentle Christmas carol.   It is based on a carol originally written in German as "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" by Josef Franz Mohr in 1818.

The most-commonly used English language translation was made by American Episcopal priest and later bishop, John Freeman Young (1820-1885).

It was set to a tune by Franz Xaver Gruber.  This is commonly believed to be composed for guitar because the church organ was broken at the when the carol was written:  the truth of this has not been confirmed.

Lyrics

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born.

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
