Christ the Lord is Risen, Risen

This is a joyous hymn about Jesus' resurrection, which is suitable for Easter Sunday and the Easter season.

The author and composer of this hymn are unknown.

If you have any information about it, especially who wrote the song, and what tune it is sung to, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

It was found in a "home made" hymnal in Ireland, which most probably dates from the 1970's or 80's and was used by the charismatic movement. However the language of this hymn is more formal than many others in the booklet, suggesting that it may be older or from a different tradition.

It is also included in Let us Sing, a hymn book published by the Dominicans in Lagos, Nigeria (ref).

Lyrics

Christ the Lord is risen, risen!
Hear the joyful story.
Christ the Lord is risen, risen!
Lifted up in glory.
Death is conquer’d, death is conquer’d,
Grave where is thy victory?
Alleluia, alleluia,
All the world is free.

Let us then be singing, singing,
To our Lord supernal.
Songs of joy and gladness bringing,
Songs of life eternal.
He is risen, he is risen!
In the grave no more he lies,
Alleluia! Alleluia! Sing it to the skies!
Christ the Lord is risen, risen.
So shall we arise.

Lifted up in glory.

All the world is free.

Let us then be singing, singing,
To our Lord supernal.
Songs of joy and gladness bringing,
Songs of life eternal.
He is risen, he is risen!
In the grave no more he lies,
Alleluia! Alleluia! Sing it to the skies!
Christ the Lord is risen, risen.
So shall we arise.

  1. These lyrics are sung to the melody CHORALE ST. ANTONI (anglicized as as ST. ANTHONY CHORALE or ST. ANTHONY'S CHORALE), which is actually an old Burgenland chant. The melody is often erroneously attributed to composer Franz Joseph Haydn (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variations_on_a_Theme_by_Haydn for more discussion). I sang it in a Lutheran church choir in the 1980s, from a book of multiple anthems.
