The Trees of the Field (will clap their hands)

This is a joyous song of sending-forth, based on Isaiah 55:12.

The words were paraphrased by Jewish writer Steffi Karen Rubin (b 1950).

The tune, named THE TREES OF THE FIELD, was written by Jewish American musician Stuart Dauermann (b. 1944).    It has irregular meter, and a 4/4 time signature.    The original publication was in the key of Em, and the first few notes in this key are B, EF G F E.

The song was first published in 1975 by Lillenas Publishing Co, New York, and has been included in many collections since.   In the UK, it is in the in-print Catholic Hymns Old and New, 2009 from Kevin Mayhew Publications.

Lyrics

You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace,
And the mountains and the hills will break forth before you.
There'll be shouts of joy and the trees of the fields
Will clap, will clap their hands.

And the trees of the fields will clap their hands,
And the trees of the fields will clap their hands,
And the trees of the fields will clap their hands,
While you go out with joy.

  2. Lovely nostalgic memory of this heard for first time on camp in 1980, played and sung by team member as reveille round the tents.
