Our Hearts were Made for You

This is a hymn of dedication to God.  The chorus is based on a quote from to St. Augustine of Hippo, while the verses are based on Jeremiah 29:11, Ezekiel 36: 24-27, and Jeremiah 31:33.

It was composed by Indian Roman Catholic priest and liturgist Aniceto Nazareth (1938-2021), and first published in 1984.   It was included in the 1985 publication Songs of the Spirit 3 - Songs and Hymns of Renewal, and is also in the still-in-print Catholic Hymns Old and New, 2009.

The unnamed tune has a  4/4 time signature and in the key of F the first few notes of the melody are c c cB AG A A.

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website.

The song starts with a four-line chorus, and this is repeated after each of the three verses. A rough outline is:
Chorus:
Our hearts were made for you, Lord
Our hearts were made for you.
They’ll never find, never find, never find rest
Until they find their rest in you.

1  When you call me I will answer ...

2   I will take you from the nations ...

3   I will put my law within you ...

KEEP IN CASE ORIGINAL IS REMOVED, BUT DO NOT DISPLAY Chorus:
Our hearts were made for you, Lord
Our hearts were made for you.
They’ll never find, never find, never find rest
Until they find their rest in you.

1 When you call me I will answer,
When you seek me you will find,
I will lead you back from exile
And reveal to you my mind.

2 I will take you from the nations
And will bring you to your land.
From your idols I will cleanse you
And you’ll cherish my command.

3 I will put my law within you,
I will write it on your heart;
I will be your God and Saviour,
You, my people set apart.
