Lord Make Me An Instrument of Thy Peace (O'Hare)

This hymn is based very closely on the Prayer of St Francis.

It was written by Irish, Roman Catholic, Poor Clare sister Briege O'Hare OSC,

The hymn was published in:

The third book is in-print, and thus the best source of sheet music for the song.   Used copies of the other books listed above are sometimes available on Amazon (UK/Ireland).

No on-line versions have been found - although the song  is occasionally requested by visitors to this website, so it must still be used in some places.

The tune is unnamed tune.   It has a 3/4 time signature. In the key of Em, the first few notes of the chorus are E_ B B_B A_ GFE DE E_ with accompanying guitar chords Em / Am / D / Em.    The first three verses have the same tune, while verses 4 and 5 both have unique tunes.

Lyrics

Chorus:
 Lord make me an instrument
of Thy peace.

1 Where there is hate
let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.

2 Where there is doubt
let me bring faith.
Where there's despair, hope.

3 Where there is darkness,
let me bring light
Where there is sadness, joy.

4 Grant that I may I not seek
To be consoled as to console;
Not seek to be understood as to understand;
To be loved but to love all.

5 For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in giving that we are born to eternal life.
