The words were written by British evangelist and hymn-writer William Dunn Longstaff (1822-1894). It was first published in 1882.
With meter of 65 65 D, it has almost always been published with the tune HOLINESS (sometimes called LONGSTAFF) by George C Stebbins (1890). However it has also been set to
- an un-named tune by P P Bilhorn 9in 1989)
- an un-named, anonymous tune in 1901
- SLANE - a traditional Irish tune.
