Bring Forth the Kingdom (You are salt for the earth) - Haugen

This is a lively hymn of encouragement about the Kingdom of God.    It is inspired by Matthew 5: 13-16 (You are salt of the earth / light of the world etc).

It was written by American Lutheran composer and pastoral musician, Marty Haugen (b 1950) and first published in 1986.   Sheet music is still available from various sources.

With irregular meter the song is set to tune, also by Haugen, which is sometimes called BRING FOR THE KINGDOM . This has a 2/2 time signature. In the key of D, the first few notes are F FF G FE D FA B_ with accompanying chords D -- G/D -- D -- D/F#

1 You are salt for the earth, O people ...

Chorus:
Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace.
Bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the kingdom of God!

2 You are a light on the hill, O people ...

3 You are a seed of the word, O people ...

4 We are the bless'd and a pilgrim people ...

You are salt for the earth, O people,
salt for the city of God!
Share the flavor of life, O people:
life in the kingdom of God!

Chorus:
Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace.
Bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the kingdom of God!

You are a light on the hill, O people,
light for the city of God!
Shine so holy and bright, O people:
shine for the kingdom of God!

You are a seed of the word, O people,
bring forth the kingdom of God!
Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice,
grow in the kingdom of God!

We are the bless'd and a pilgrim people,
bound for the kingdom of God!
Love our journey and love our homeland:
love is the kingdom of God!
