His State was Divine - Andersen

This hymn about Jesus based on Philippians 2:6-11, which is one of the prescribed scripture readings for Palm Sunday in the Catholic church.

It was written by Australian Roman Catholic priest and liturgist Fr Frank Andersen MSC.

It was originally published in the "Everything I Possess" collection, which was renamed Galilee Song, and so is included in the Scripture in Song - The Music of Frank Andersen MSC collection, which is still available. Both of there include lead-sheet style sheet music.

The tune was written by Fr Andersen: it is in a minor key (Em in the original printing), with a 6:8 time signature. The tune is in two parts which seem like a chorus / verse structure - although there are different words for each version of the chorus.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
His state was divine, his gift was himself.
Poured out for us he became like us
And was more humble still even accepting death,
Death on a cross.

1 God raised him high giving him that name
That goes beyond all names: Jesus, the Lord.

2. Let every voice proclaim in joy:
Jesus is Lord. Glory to God.
