It is named after and inspired by the Via Dolorosa is a street in the Old City of Jerusalem which is traditionally held to be the path Jesus walked on the way to his Crucifixion.
The song was originally published in 1984 by Meadowgreen Music / Word music. It was released as a single by American singer Sandy Patty in 2005, and many people many people now (incorrectly) attribute it to her.
It is set to an unnamed tune, also by XX. This has a C time signature. In the key of Gm, the first few notes are G A B_ D G B A_ F
