Flower of Carmel, tall vine blossom laden

This is a hymn about Mary, under her title Our Lady of Mt Carmel.

It is one of many translations of the Flos Carmeli - a Latin prayer written by St. Simon Stock (c1165 – 1265) during a time of hardship for the Carmelite order.    The translator is unknown.

It was originally set to a chant tune - shown in the third video below.   More recently it has been set to a folk-style tune:  this is unnamed, the composer is unknown and no sheet music has been found.  If you know anything more about it, please leave message in the Comments box at the bottom of the page.

Lyrics

Flower of Carmel, tall vine blossom-laden;
Splendour of heaven, child-bearing yet maiden,
None equals thee,
None equals thee.

Mother so tender, whom no man didst know,
On Carmel’s children, thy favours bestow,
Star of the Sea,
Star of the Sea!

Strong stem of Jesse, who bore one bright flower,
Be ever near us, and guard us each hour,
Who serve thee here,
Who serve thee here.

O gentle Mother, who in Carmel reigns,
Share with your servants that gladness you gained,
And now enjoy,
And now enjoy.

Hail, Gate of Heaven, with glory now crowned,
Bring us to safety where thy Son is found,
True joy to see,
True joy to see.
