Queen and Beauty (Lady) of Mount Carmel

This is a hymn about Mary, under her title Our Lady of Mt Carmel.  It is an alternative version of Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel.

The words in the verses are similar - it's likely that most, if not all, are from a work by American Roman Catholic poet and Carmelite nun, Jessica (Sr Miriam of the Holy Spirit) Powers (1905–1988).  Different verses are used in different communities, and in this hymn  they are combined with a chorus that is similar to the one in Pure as Carmel's Snows and Lovely.

It is included in this Novena booklet printed in 1928 (ref).

The tune used in the video below has not been identified.

Simple sheet music is available here - this attributes the tune to American Roman Catholic Sr Mary Anne (Sister Anne of the Mother of God and of the Holy Spirit) Schumann (1922-2002 -ref).

Lyrics

Queen and beauty of Mount Carmel(*)
Seen by prophet’s mystic gaze;
Shown above the holy mountain
As Elijah kneels and prays.
Could-like rising from the ocean,
Pure and free from every stain,
She has claimed his heart’s devotion
Through the ages to remain.

Refrain:
Mother of Mount Carmel hear!
When we call, oh! be thou near!
Mother of Mount Carmel hear!
When we call, oh! be thou near!

To the prophet’s sons is given
As a sacred legacy
Love of Mary’s pure conception–
Virgin-mother yet to be!
Tender Mother, she has clothed us
With a double garment fair.
Pledge of heavenly protection,
Is the scapular we wear.

Queen and beauty of Mount Carmel!
Christ’s dear gift on Calvary!
Refuge sure in every danger!
Confident we fly to thee.
Mother, hear our humble pleading,
Grant the favors we implore;
To the love we are appealing,
Bless us now and evermore.

Virgin of the Incarnation,
In the mysteries of grace
God has made his habitation
In our soul’s most secret place.
Towards that bright and inner kingdom
All our words and ways compel
For the Father, Son and Spirit
In its sacred silence dwell.

Queen and beauty of Mount Carmel,
Virgin of the solitude,
In the wilderness of Carmel
Lies the world’s eternal good.
Draw us into deep seclusion
And make God alone our goal,
In the mystical Mount Carmel
That lies hidden in the soul.
