Christ is Risen from the Dead / Resurrexit Sicut Dixit Alleluia Alleluia

This is a hymn for Easter.

The words were written by American Roman Catholic priest and author Jeremiah William Cummings (1824-1866).

Sheet music from one 1880 publication is provided below - but it is not known if this is the setting which was people remember being sung every Easter in some places in the mid 20th century, or who composed it.   If you have any information about settings of the hymn, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Lyrics

Christ is risen from the dead,
Risen as he truly said,
O praise the Lord with grateful voice!
Bless his name, rejoice, rejoice!
Resurrexit sicut dixit,
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Angels clad in snowy white,
Coming from the realms of light,
They bid us sing with grateful voice!
Bid us all rejoice, rejoice!
Resurrexit sicut dixit,
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Man was but a slave before,
Man is free forevermore,
Now heav'n and earth, with grateful voice,
Bid us all rejoice, rejoice!
Resurrexit sicut dixit,
Alleluia, Alleluia!
