Is mise an Tiarna

This is a cheerful Irish-language hymn don Cáisc (for Easter).

It was recorded on a single EP released under the Glenside label in 1973 (ref).   It was performed by Liam Devally, Aedin Ni Choileain and the Young Lindsay Singers, directed by Ethna Barror.

This listing of tracks from Glenside credits the words to Sean E. O’Cearbhaill  - most likely Irish Roman Catholic teacher, poet, historian and Christian Brother Seán E. Ó Cearbhaill (1922-2011) ref.    - and the music to C O’Treasaigh.

If you have any information about the composer, or know where to find sheet music for the song or a better translation of the words, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of this page.

Thanks  to the anonymous person who left the full lyrics for this song on this blog, and comments left with the two videos on YouTube:  these were invaluable in locating more information about the song.

Irish lyrics

Is mise an Tiarna
is chónaigh mé abhus;
Ardaigh do chroí, beidh mar a bhí
Éireoidh an lá, míneofar an fáth
Is mise an Tiarna, Tiarna an ghrá.

1)Is mise an Tiarna chruthaigh mé an domhan
Seanbhean ag ghuí, éin ag suirí
An ghrian go hard agus planda glas ag fás
Is mise an Tiarna, Tiarna an Ghrá.

2 Is mise an Tiarna, d’aiséirigh mé ón mbás
Anois an t-am, tóg suas do cheann
Ón gcogadh, ón ngá, ón gcruatan is diomá,
Is mise an Tiarna, Tiarna an Ghrá

VERY rough translation

(Google, with very slight changes).
I am the Lord
I lived with you;
Raise your heart, it will be as it was
The day will pass, the reason will be explained.
I am the Lord, the Lord of love.

1 I am the Lord who created the world
Old woman praying, birds flying,
The sun is high and the green plants are growing
I am the Lord, the Lord of Love.

2 I am the Lord, I have risen from the dead
Now is the time. Lift up your head
From war, from need, from hardship and disappointment,
I am the Lord, the Lord of Love.
