I Believe in God the Father

This hymn is a short statement of faith, focussed on the Trinity.

It was written by Scottish Roman Catholic priest (Jesuit) and hymn-writer, James Quinn SJ (1919–2010).

It was first published in his book, Praise for all Seasons (ref).  No further publications have been found.

With meter 87 87, Quinn suggested setting it to the tune SUSSEX, a traditional English melody adapted as a hymn by Ralph Vaughan-Williams in 1906.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
I believe in God, the Father;
I believe in God, his Son;
I believe in God, their Spirit;
Each is God, yet God is one.

I believe what God has spoken
Through his Church, whose word is true;
Boldly she proclaims his Gospel,
Ever old, yet ever new.

All my hope is in God's goodness,
shown for us by He who died:
Jesus Christ, the world's redeemer,
Spotless victim, crucified.

All that love is Love eternal,
In that Love, I love mankind:
Take my heart, O heart once broken,
Take my soul, my strength, my mind.

Bless'd be God, the loving Father;
Bless'd be God, the his only Son;
Bless'd be God, all-holy Spirit;
Bless'd be God, the for-ever one.
