The Benediction (Send your servant down the road)

This is a folk-style hymn about living faithfully and giving glory to God.

It was written by Australian Lutheran biblical scholar and teacher, Norm Habel in the mid 1960s originally for as one of a set of songs for teenagers, set to contemporary tunes.  It was the title track of an album released by The Black River Singers (ref)

It was later published in the All Together Now collection edited by Robin Mann (ref) and published by the Lutheran Publishing House for the Board for Congregational Life of the Lutheran Church of Australia.   Second-hand copies of this book are perhaps the only source of sheet music for the song now.

Lyrics

The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
1  Send your servant down the road, with your message for his load,

Chorus:
So I’ll give him glory to the end, to the end,
I’ll give him glory to the end.

2  Shouts of glory to the Father, shouts of glory to the Son,

3  Thank the Lord for he is real, thank him for his precious meal,

Second chorus:
And we’ll give him glory to the end, to the end,
We’ll give him glory to the end.

4 Now the Lord will bless us all, he will lift us when we fall ...

And he’ll give us peace, where’er we’re bound, e’er we’re bound,
He’ll give us peace where’er we’re bound.
And we’ll cry AMEN where’er we’re bound, e’er we’re bound,
We’ll cry AMEN where’er we’re bound.

KEEP IN CASE ORIGINAL IS REMOVED, BUT DO NOT DISPLAY
Send your servant down the road
With your message for his load,
For I have seen where freedom leads.
It’s the coming of the Lord,
It’s the light that fills the world,
It’s all his people ever need:

Chorus:
So I’ll give him glory to the end, to the end,
I’ll give him glory to the end.

Shouts of glory to the Father,
Shouts of glory to the Son,
And glory to the Holy Ghost.
That’s the way the world began
When creation rose and sang,
Give glory to the God we boast:

Thank the Lord for he is real,
Thank him for his precious meal,
And pray for nerve to carry on.
Give us faith to turn the wheel,
For no matter how we feel,
The love we share comes through his Son:

Second chorus:
And we’ll give him glory to the end, to the end,
We’ll give him glory to the end.

Now the Lord will bless us all,
He will lift us when we fall,
And speed us on our way this year.
He will flood us with his grace,
When he lifts his shining face,
To help us shatter every fear:

And he’ll give us peace, where’er we’re bound, e’er we’re bound,
He’ll give us peace where’er we’re bound.
And we’ll cry AMEN where’er we’re bound, e’er we’re bound,
We’ll cry AMEN where’er we’re bound.
