Praise the Lord, Ye Heavens Adore Him

This is a hymn of praise, based on Psalm 148.

The author of the first and second verses is not known:   Various sources have attributed them to John Kempthorne (1775–1838), and most-commonly English born and educated writer and Church of England vicar, Richard Mant (1776-1848).  However there is no agreement among hymn-scholars that any of these people were involved, and most simply note that was found in a book published by or for the London Foundling Hospital in 1796.

The third verse, which is written in the second person ("we offer to you") was written by English Church of England member, medical doctor/surgeon and later scholar and journal editor, Edward Osler (1798-1863).

With meter 8.7.8.7 D, tunes it is set to include - but are certainly not limited to -:
  • AUSTRIAN HYMN by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and based on a Croatian folk tune:  this is perhaps the most-commonly recorded tune for this hymn
  • FABEN (Willcox) by John H. Willcox (1849)
  • HYFRYDOL by Welch textile worker and composer, Rowland H. Prichard (1811-1887)
  • ODE TO JOY from Beethoven's 9th Symphony
More recently, contemporary songwriter Eric J. Marshall has  added a chorus and set the text as four line verses to a new tune:  chord-charts for this are available from the Young Oceans website.

Lyrics

Traditional language

Praise the Lord! ye heav'ns adore him;
Praise him angels, in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before him;
Praise him, all ye stars of light.
Praise the Lord! for he has spoken;
Worlds his mighty voice obeyed;
Laws which never shall be broken
For their guidance he hath made.

Praise the Lord! for he is glorious;
Never shall his promise fail;
God has made his saints victorious;
Sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation!
Hosts on high his pow'r proclaim;
Heav'n, and earth, and all creation,
Laud and magnify his name.

Worship, honour, glory, blessing,
Lord, we offer unto thee;
Young and old, thy praise expressing,
In glad homage bend the knee.
All the saints in heav'n adore thee,
We would bow before thy throne;
As thine angels serve before thee,
So on earth thy will be done.

Modern English

Praise the Lord! you heavens, adore Him;
Praise Him, angels in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before Him,
Praise Him, all you stars of light.
Praise the Lord, for He has spoken;
World His mighty voice obeyed;
Laws which never shall be broken
For their guidance He has made.

Praise the Lord! for He is glorious;
Never shall His promise fail.
God has made His saints victorious;
Sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation!
Hosts on high, His power proclaim;
Heaven and earth and all creation,
Laud and magnify His name.

Worship, honour, glory, blessing,
Lord, we offer as our gift.
Young and old, Your praise expressing,
Our glad songs to You we lift.
All the saints in heaven adore You,
We would join their glad acclaim;
As Your angels serve before You,
So on earth we praise Your name.

Chorus by Eric Marshall - used with 4 line verses made from the above

All creation join the song of praise
Let every tongue declare His mighty ways
And we will sing of Your goodness and mercy
All of our days!
