God my King Your Might Confessing / God my King Thy Might Confessing

This is a hymn of praise, about God's might and kingship.  The words are based on Psalm 145:1-12.

The words were written by English born and educated author and Church of England vicar, Richard Mant (1776-1848), and first published in his 1842 publication, Book of Psalms, in an English Metrical Version.

With meter 8.7.8.7, tunes it has set to include:
  • STUTTGART  from the Psalmodia Sacra (1715),  attributed to Christian Friedrich Witt (1715) - this is the tune used in most recent recordings
  • ST. OSWALD (Dykes 53617) by English organist and composer John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876).

Lyrics

Traditional language

God, my king, thy might confessing,
ever will I bless thy name;
day by day thy throne addressing,
still will I thy praise proclaim.

Honour great our God befitteth;
who his majesty can reach?
Age to age his works transmitteth;
age to age his pow'r shall teach.

They shall talk of all thy glory,
on thy might and greatness dwell,
speak of thy great acts the story,
and thy deeds of wonder tell.

Nor shall fail from mem'ry's treasure
works by love and mercy wrought:
works of love surpassing measure,
works of mercy passing thought.

Full of kindness and compassion,
slow to anger, vast in love,
God is good to all creation;
all his works his goodness prove.

All thy works, O Lord, shall bless thee,
thee shall all thy saints adore.
King supreme shall they confess thee,
and proclaim thy sovereign pow'r.

Modern English

God, my king, Your might confessing,
ever will I bless Your name;
Day by day Your throne addressing,
Still will I Your praise proclaim.

Honour great befits our Godhead;
who such majesty can reach?
Age to age Your works transmitting;
Age to age Your pow'r shall teach.

They shall talk of all Your glory,
on Your might and greatness dwell,
speak of Your great acts, the story,
and Your deeds of wonder tell.

Nor shall fail from mem'ry's treasure
works by love and mercy wrought:
Works of love surpassing measure,
works of mercy passing thought.

Full of kindness and compassion,
slow to anger, vast in love,
You are good to all creation;
All Your works Your goodness prove.

All Your works, O Lord, shall bless You,
You shall all the saints adore.
King supreme shall they confess You,
and proclaim Your sovereign pow'r.
