I am the Vine / We Shall be one in Love

This is a folk-style hymn about unity, probably written in the 1960s.   It is based on John 5:15, which presents the image of Jesus as the vine and people as branches.  It is written from Jesus' perspective.  It can also be appropriate for funerals.

The author and composer are unknown, and no published sheet music has been located.   However YouTube shows the song being used by folk-choirs in a wide variety of Catholic churches, particularly in Asia.  It has also been recorded, set to a different tune, by a priest in the Philippines - this tune seems more recent.

If you have any information about the song, especially who wrote it and where to find sheet music, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Lyrics

Chorus:
I am the vine and you are the branches
abide in me as I in you,
We shall be one in love.

I give my life my wine to drink.
I give my love my bread to eat,
I give myself like food for you,
I give myself like food for you.

Alternative verse 1:
I give my life my blood to drink.
I give my love my body to eat,
I give myself like food for you,
I give myself like food for you.

Many the grains but one in bread,
Many the grapes but one in wine,
Many are you but one in Me,
Many are you but one in Me.

Unless the seeds falls in the ground,
And give their life, like me for you,
Would you ever rise again?
Would you ever rise again?

There are lepers in the street,
Blind men calling out your name,
Can you drink the cup I give?
Can you drink the cup I give?

I give my life for those I love,
You say that you are one in Me,
Would you let me die alone?
Would you let me die alone?

I see my brothers everywhere,
You see their faces in my eyes,
Can’t you see my tears are gone?
Can’t you see my tears are gone?
