It was originally written as a worship-chorus by British contemporary Christian singer-songwriter and musician Christopher Neville (Chris) Eaton (b 1958), and included on his 1995 album, Wonderful World.
With Eaton's consent, American evangelical / popular singer-songwriter and musician Amy Grant (b 1960), adapted the chorus and added verses to include a mother's perspective of Mary's story. This version was included in Grant's second Christmas album, Home For Christmas which was released in 1992, and subsequently recorded by many artists including Donna Summer, Jessica Simpson, Vince Gill, Sara Groves, Gladys Knight and Barbara Cook.
It is set to an unnamed tune, also by Eaton and adapted by Grant. This has a 4/4 time signature. In the key of Bm, the first few notes of the melody are B,C, D E_ z B,C, D E_ B,_ with accompanying chords Bm / Em / Bm / G / Em.

Grant released a book based on the song in 2001, which expands on the themes with matching classic artwork and contextual visuals.

Lyrics
The lyrics are copyright so cannot be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:1. I have traveled many moonless nights ...
2. I am waiting in a silent prayer ...
Chorus:
Breath of heaven hold me together
Be forever near me
Breath of heaven, breath of heaven
Lighten my darkness
Pour over me your holiness
For you are holy breath of heaven.
3. Do you wonder as you watch my face ...
