Great is the Lord and Greatly to be Praised /Beautiful for Situation

This is a gentle praise chorus about God's greatness.  The words are based on Psalm 48:1-2, and Ephesians 4:4-5.

It was included in the book, Songs of Praise from Scripture in Song Recordings Ltd, New Zealand 1973, and then their 1979 book Scripture in Song - Songs of Praise - Volume 1 - having been released on the 1970 recording "Thou Art Worthy."   These books attribute the song to Robert Ewing, and say it is "used by permission" - but provide no information about him.

One later source attributes it to "R. E. (1976)" - but comments on various forums / videos say that it was being sung in the 1960s.  The song was included in Songs of Fellowship volume on (Kingsway Music, UK, 1991) with author and composer unknown.

YouTube shows that it is still used in some places, though no later publications have been located.  One video includes two additional verses - the author of these is unknown.

If you have any information about Robert Ewing, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Lyrics

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
In the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness,

Chorus:
Beautiful for situation,
The joy of the whole earth,
Is mountain Zion, on the sides of the north,
The city of the great King.
Is mountain Zion, on the sides of the north,
The city of the great King.

2. Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad,
Because of thy judgements, walk about Zion.

3. For this God is our God for ever and ever:
He will be our guide even unto death.
