I Want to Sing (I want to shout your praise, O Lord)

This is a hymn of praise.  The words are based on Psalm 57 (56) 8-12.

It was written by French Roman Catholic Spiritan (Holy Ghost) priest and composer Lucien Deiss CSSp (1921-2007).

Hymn-books where it has been published in include:
  • Young People's Folk Hymnal Volume 1, World Library Publications, USA, 1965
  • People's Mass Book,  Complete Daily Missal Edition, 1964  and New Daily Missal Edition, World Library Publications, USA, 1966
  • Alleluia!  Amen, Veritas Publications, Ireland, 197
  • Nigerian Catholic Hymn Book

It was originally included on the album, Lucien Deiss – Like Olive Branches (Biblical Hymns And Psalms) released by World Library of Sacred Music in the mid 1960s.   Later, it was later included in a 2-CD collection,  Lucien Deiss - Jubilee, released by World Library Publications in 1995 (source).

The song is set to an unnamed tune, also by Deiss. This has a 2/4 time signature. When notated on a staff with F, the first few notes of the melody are F AB AF AF AFD__

Despite these varied publications, the hymn appears to be not well-known: there are no videos on YouTube and very limited evidence of it being used in parishes.   If you know where to find a recording, please leave a message in the Comments box near the bottom of the page.

Lyrics

Antiphon
I want to sing, I want to shout your praise, O Lord!
Awake and sing my soul;
Awake and play, my harp and zither!
Let the dawning day join in praise.

1. My heart is ready to praise you, O Lord;
To bless you, God of my salvation, alleluia!

2. For great and wonderful your glory, my God;
Your name is great above the heavens, alleluia

3. Lord, your mercy over-shadows the earth;
Your glory lights the firmament on high. Alleluia
