O Peter you were Named by Christ

This is a hymn about Saints Peter and Paul.   It has two verses for each saint, and a generic one about the Trinity - so could be used for them individually as a three-verse hymn.

The words are attributed to The Benedictine nuns of Stanbrook Abbey:  the specific author and first publication date are not known.

With meter 8.8.8.8, tunes it is set to include:
  • OLD HUNDREDTH, attributed to Louis Bourgeois (1551) - the tune of All People that on Earth do Dwell
  • GONFALON ROYAL by Percy C Buck (1871—1947)
  • WAREHAM by William Knapp (1698-1768)
  • MELCOMBE by Samuel Webbe the elder (1740-1816)
  • WINCHESTER NEW from Musikalisches Handbuch der geistlichen Melodien, Germany, in 1690 - used for hymn including On Jordan's Bank.
It appears that the hymn has not settled into being associated with any particular tune.

Lyrics

The lyrics may be copyright so perhaps should not be reproduced here. But they are currently available on this website. A rough outline is:
O Peter, you were named by Christ,
The guardian-shepherd of his flock;
Protect the Church he built on you
To stand unyielding, firm on rock.

Your weakness Christ exchanged for strength;
You faltered, but he made you true;
He knew the greatness of your love,
And gave the keys of heaven to you.

Apostle of the gentiles, Paul,
The greatest witness of them all,
You turned to Christ, the risen Lord,
When out of light you heard him call.

You journeyed far and wide to tell
That Christ was risen from the dead;
That all who put their faith in him
Would live for ever, as he said.

Unseen, eternal Trinity,
We give you glory, praise your name:
Your love keeps faith with faithless hearts;
Through change and stress you are the same.
