Jesus, Son of Mary, Fount of Life Alone

This is based on Yesu Bin Mariamu, a hymn for Holy Communion written in Swahili by English Anglican priest and some-time missionary to Zanzibar, Edmund Stuart Palmer (1856-1931).  The first verse or two are about the Eucharist, while the others are petitioning for the deceased who are not yet in heaven - making the hymn particularly suitable for All Souls Day.

Palmer translated it into English as "Jesu, Son of Mary, Fount of life alone".  The was first published in 1902, and then revised for The English Hymnal, 1906.

With meter 11.11.11.11, tunes it has been set to include:
  • ADORO TE DEVOTE Plainchant, Mode V, 13th century - from the Processionale, Paris, 1697 - perhaps the best-known tune used for this hymn
  • EUDOXIA by English priest and composer Sabine Baring-Gould  (1834-1924)
  • WEM IN LEIDENSTAGEN by German composer Friedrich Filitz (1804-1876)
  • by J. A. P. Schulz (1785)
  • CORPUS DOMINI (Malet) by G. E. W. Malet (1839-1918).

Lyrics

Traditional language

1 Jesu, Son of Mary, fount of life alone,
here we hail thee present on thine altar- throne.

2 Humbly we adore thee, Lord of endless might,
in the mystic symbols veiled from earthly sight.

3 Think, O Lord, in mercy on the souls of those
who, in faith gone from us, now in death repose.

4 Here 'mid stress and conflict toils can never cease;
there, the warfare ended, bid them rest in peace.

5 Often were they wounded in the deadly strife;
heal them, Good Physician, with the balm of life.

6 Every taint of evil, frailty and decay,
good and gracious Saviour, cleanse and purge away.

7 Rest eternal grant them, after weary fight;
shed on them the radiance of thy heavenly light.

8 Lead them onward, upward, to the holy place,
where thy saints made perfect gaze upon thy face.
