It was set to a Hebrew folk-tune (composer unknown, assumed to be
public domain) by Naomi Batya Ginsberg (later renamed Nomi Yah, b 1961) and
Sophie Conty in 1974, when they were 13. They sang it at a large
missionary conference that Batya's mother was attending, and the missionaries
spread the song organically.
The song was included in an LP, Kids of the Kingdom - Follow the Leader
released under the Birdwing label in 1978 (source), and later recorded
by Maranatha Praise in 1980. It became very well-known in 1990s,
when Petra recorded the song in a rock-style.
